Dr. Ashworth brings expertise to St. Rose outreach clinic

By awamser - Community Wellness,HaysMed / St. Rose

Ashworth OriginalA cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon is one of the newest members on the team of specialists available to local and area residents. Elizabeth Ashworth, M.D., F.A.C.S., sees patients once a month in Great Bend.

Dr. Ashworth’s home base is the DeBakey Heart Institute at Hays Medical Center where she performs a wide range of heart, lung, vein and artery procedures.

Her local clinic currently is located at the Great Bend Healthcare Center, 1400 Polk, where she cares for patients on the second Tuesday of the month. She and other specialists will move into St. Rose Health Center later this year.

HaysMed and Centura Health co-own St. Rose.

“I am really pleased to be part of this outreach effort,” Dr. Ashworth said. “HaysMed is doing everything it can to help provide excellent service and medical care in central Kansas. We have greatly increased our number of specialists here in Great Bend and I am just one of them.

“Our goal is to offer more convenience and to reduce the stress that comes with traveling for pre-op and post-op appointments,” she continued. “Instead of taking a day off work, you can now just stop by for a consultation or post-op visit and get on with your day. This helps people so much.”

A few of Dr. Ashworth’s more common procedures include: open-heart surgery that bypasses blocked arteries; heart-valve repair and replacement; abdominal aortic aneurysm treatment; blocked carotid artery surgery; lung-cancer-related surgeries; and treatment of lung infections.

In addition, she performs blocked artery bypass procedures in the leg; procedures for aortic aneurysms in the chest; treatment of aortic dissection; and lung surgeries that require a scope.

Dr. Ashworth has been at HaysMed for five years; she is now seeing seven to 10 patients during each Great Bend visit.

The surgeon completed medical school at Indiana University School of Medicine at Indianapolis. She then completed residencies in general surgery at Indiana University Medical Center and cardiothoracic surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

Dr. Ashworth has held positions in cardiothoracic and vascular surgery at hospitals in Indiana and Kansas. She is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a member of the Society of Thoracic Surgery and Women in Thoracic Surgery. She is widely published in medical journals and health-related publications.

“All of us at HaysMed are happy to bring our specialties to the Great Bend clinic,” Dr. Ashworth commented. “We are hearing good things from the folks in central Kansas. They are glad we are here and so available to them. And we are glad to accommodate.”

St. Rose offers convenient online access to medical records

By awamser - Community Wellness,HaysMed / St. Rose

SRHC patient portal story 004Many St. Rose Health Center patients have strongly indicated they want complete and convenient access to their medical records. And their voices have been heard.

The result is called “My St. Rose Patient Portal,” which provides direct online access to personal health information.

“Our brand new portal allows patients access to their medical records anytime it is convenient for them,” said Mark Mingenback, corporate health consultant. “We have been receiving many requests from patients who want more control of their personal health and wellness management.

“We listen to what the community tells us,” Mingenback added. “And with the guidance of Hays Medical Center, we have been able to accommodate.”

HaysMed and Centura Health co-own St. Rose.

While many patients want online access to their own records, caregivers also want to streamline information to better care for loved ones.

“This is especially true for adult children who are caring for parents or grandparents,” Mingenback explained. “This patient portal will go a long way to making their lives easier as they care for family and friends.”

For example, he noted, the portal allows authorized patients and caregivers immediate access to such information as test results and changes in medication.

“In addition,” he said, “information about doctors’ appointments and immunization status are right at your fingertips. You can now see the same information your doctor sees.”

When new information becomes available, participants receive an email alerting them to the changes. The added convenience is less phone tag with doctors’ offices about common questions related to medications, diagnostic-test results and appointments.

“Chances are the portal will allow you to have better recall of your health-care plan,” Mingenback noted. “And you may be more likely to take medications as prescribed.”

It virtually eliminates delays and the possibility of misunderstanding information received by phone, he elaborated.

“The next time you have a doctor’s appointment at St. Rose, you will receive guidance about how to enroll in patient portal,” Mingenback said. “Once you get home, you can visit the website to complete the enrollment.”

That website is www.strosehc.com/mystrose . A patient or caregiver must be 18 years old to enroll in the optional program.

Mingenback emphasized the security features of patient portal.

“The information is housed in an encrypted server and is highly secure,” he said. “It also has a redundant back-up system, and is user and password protected. Patient portal meets all governmental requirements regarding privacy.”

St. Rose physicians and other health-care providers have been participating in on-site training for patient portal.

Kim Befort, HaysMed module coordinator, said the new system is a great way for patients to take a more active role in their health care.

“We have had an overwhelming response to our HaysMed patient portal and people continue to sign up every day,” Befort commented. “Thousands of people are taking advantage of all its benefits.

“Patients are finding they can communicate more effectively with their physicians’ offices as well,” Befort elaborated. “They can submit questions through the secure messaging center and receive their physicians’ responses.”

St. Rose Health Center offers blood screenings again

By awamser - Community Wellness,HaysMed / St. Rose

SRHC Lab fair story 005Karen Stewart, medical lab technician, is part of the team that has been working to reactivate St. Rose Health Center’s blood-screening program. Those efforts will start paying off Saturday, Aug. 22.

“With all the transitions here at St. Rose, our community blood screenings had to be put on hold for a while,” Stewart said. “But now we can start again and offer a screening every month.

“I am eager to see all the familiar faces and welcome newcomers,” she added. “This is a great, affordable way to monitor your health.”

The screenings are scheduled for 6:30 to 10 a.m. on the fourth Saturday of the month, with the exception of holidays. The other dates this year are Sept. 26, Oct. 24, Nov. 21 and Dec. 19.

Services include a blood profile for $25. The profile includes a complete blood count; comprehensive chemistry that analyzes more than 20 blood chemistries including electrolytes, liver enzymes and kidney functions; lipid profile for a breakdown of cholesterol numbers and triglycerides; and a thyroid test.

Fasting for 10-12 hours before a blood profile is strongly recommended.

However, fasting isn’t necessary for the two other blood tests that are offered – a PSA test that checks a man’s prostate and the HGBA1C test for diabetes.

The prostate test costs $16 and the diabetes screen is $7.50. “I haven’t seen prices this affordable anywhere,” Stewart said.

While the cost is an important consideration, the technician added, a blood test can help prevent or alleviate problems down the road.

“For instance, I know some men who have participated in our community screenings and discovered they had prostate cancer,” Stewart said. “They caught it at an early stage.”

Diabetics and those concerned with cholesterol oftentimes want to be checked more often than Medicare and other insurance allows. They want regular screenings so they can monitor their health throughout the year, she noted.

Mark Mingenback, St. Rose corporate health consultant, agreed with Stewart by saying that “blood work is the roadmap for overall health. The community wanted this program and now we are in a position to oblige.”

The screenings also fit in nicely with St. Rose’s WellnessWorks initiative, Mingenback commented.

“Health-care reform encourages people to become more engaged in preventing illness,” he said. “Some insurance companies even offer financial incentives, depending on your plan. If you can prove your cholesterol is in the healthy range, for example, it could have an effect on your insurance premium.”

Mingenback outlined a few other details about the new program.

o   Use the new St. Rose parking lot west of St. Rose, across from the convent.

o   Volunteers will direct participants to their destination.

o   No doctor referral is needed; no appointment is necessary.

o   A short form can be completed at St. Rose or online by visiting www.strosehc.com .

o   Results will be mailed 5-7 business days after the screening.

o   Patients can give the results to their doctor if they choose.

o   Cash and checks will be accepted.

“We are trying to make this as convenient and affordable as possible,” Mingenback summarized. “We encourage local and area residents to participate and take an active role in their health care.”
